I was copied on an email today from someone looking for advice on setting up an internal blog. Up to now, I don't think I've heard of a non-blogger being told to blog. Interesting.
"I've been directed by my manager to set up an internal blog for my overall product team."
We still have no corporate “mandate” to blog at Microsoft, but it looks like it’s close to “tipping”. Of course developer blogs serve a corporate purpose, as well as a community purpose. PDCblog is a great example of a blog with a purpose.
In fact, now there are companies that consult with companies about blogging. Big Blog makes for interesting reading.
"The Big Blog Company is a one-stop shop for company blogs, a new tool for on-line communication for companies that want to strengthen their relationship with customers and their presence in the marketplace. The Big Blog Company has set out to transform blogging into an effective communication and marketing method. We will introduce the concept to companies, think tanks, charities and institutions that rely on loyal following, credibility and public awareness. The rise of web logs and their increasing impact on the mainstream media have highlighted their potential as an effective alternative communication channel for companies. This has inspired the Big Blog Company to turn blogs into a credible tool that is able to improve upon and compete against traditional marketing."
Yeah, I saw that too. I almost wish I was directed to blog though. Then I could actually use some time at work to blog and not have to worry about never having time anymore for a decent entry.

It has been one of my complaint that the
